I’ve not been good about reading…

Posted on

One of the things I wanted to do this year was read more, and I’m not talking about reading outloud for homeschooling. Read more for pleasure and for my own edification. I set my goals very low, 12 books for 2016, in the hopes that I’d actually double that. Well, here we are at the end of January and I haven’t read a single book. *sigh*

I started a book but was having trouble getting into it and decided I didn’t like the author’s style. So, I gave myself permission to return it to the library unfinished.

I picked up three more books at the library today.

I’m letting myself enjoy light reading right now, because I am sorely out of practice. I want to challenge myself to read more meaty books in the future, but in the meantime I’m enjoying these. I started the middle book, “If You Were Here” this afternoon and I can tell it’s going to be a quick and enjoyable read. Hopefully I’ll be able to meet my monthly goal in the next 5 days before February starts. ;-)

“Dewey” is next, and “The Cat, the Vagabond and the Victim” is a cozy mystery if I end up not being able to finish the other two. :-) (I really enjoy Cozy Mysteries when I need something light, though I find that they start to annoy me if I read too many of them. I enjoy how many of them feature cats, though!)

Speaking of books, Savannah and I are reading “The House at Pooh Corner” in school right now. We just read the chapter where Tigger is introduced and it reminded me SO much of the 11th Doctor!

I have often equated 11 with Tigger, but I didn’t realize that part of the story was almost lifted straight from A.A. Milne, ha! That was fun, and it was fun to be able to talk about the similarities with Savannah. :-) #raisingthemright

Keeping focused despite sickness

Posted on

So far, 2016 has been plagued with sickness – all mine. I think the past 6.5 years of inconsistent sleep, and especially the past 16 months, plus months of eating out while we were renovating our house, have caught up with me. I got my wisdom teeth out right before New Years, and it took 2 weeks to recover. Thankfully I’m out of pain now but I was worried there for a bit! I’ve also had a really hard time getting back in the swing of things after Christmas break. I have to take Caroline to preschool every morning and it’s been such a struggle when the temps are in the high 20s! I’ve been wrestling with insomnia, and being so tired all day that I don’t have the energy to get things done. I think my body just needs to reset but it’s going to be miserable for a few days while I adjust.

Last night I think I had a gall bladder attack – I got them a few times after Savannah was born but they stopped. Then I got a migraine around the same time (related or not related?) and have struggled with that all day. It’s almost gone now, but I’m wide awake at 2:30am due to sleeping all evening.

Because of this, I’m more operating in survival mode right now instead of trying to work on my goals. But, that is life and I think the point is not to give up but pick up again when things are better.

I have been trying to keep up with my daily devotions. I think I’m getting into a routine that I like. I’m also trying to surround myself with positive and godly things – like listening to Christian music and following positive/godly pages on Facebook. When I come across an image with words that I find challenging or thought provoking, I save it to my phone, for future reference. I think these have all been good changes.

That being said, I actually haven’t done my Bible reading yet tonight so I should go do that now. :-)

P.S. I’m really bad at blog titles. Can I just call them “update #1″ and so on?  :-p

Purpose and goal update

I’ve been thinking about what I want from writing in this blog.

I think I’ve moved beyond the desire to have a daily record of what I am doing. It was nice at the time, but now feels tedious. So I think I’ll move on from that. I am thinking of using this space more as a place to share what’s on my mind. The problem with that is I don’t usually get a chance to fully flesh out my deep thoughts… so you’ll have to bear with me and not nitpick. ;-)

I’d also like a place to record my own personal growth, and specifically the goals I posted a few days ago.

So, we’ll see how twentysixcats develops. :-)

As for the goals…

I’ve been doing my quiet time every day! I’m proud of myself.

I haven’t started any books yet. I hope to have energy to go to the library tomorrow and renew my card (I got an email a few weeks ago that I needed to do that). I want to pick up a book while I’m there.

I have not been feeling well due to oral surgery a week ago. So, I have been giving myself a break in regards to housework and being present with the kids. I need to make sure I don’t turn it into an excuse, though.

Need to find the journal I got for my birthday and start writing!

I signed up for YNAB again and started working on our budget. Then I got very depressed, ha. We’re going to have a really tough few months while we undo bad habits and also recover from some unexpected expenses  (mostly related to my teeth). Gotta keep with it, though.

What I’ve been up to

Posted on

I feel in some ways like I’m visiting an old friend. It’s been so long! So much to catch up on! Looking through my posts, I realize it’s been 2 or 3 years since I blogged regularly.

Let’s see. Back then, I was a very active volunteer with Atlanta Birth Center. I moved away from that and together with a friend started a group called Georgia Moms for Better Birth. We started out as a pregnancy/birth support group with an online forum and in person meetings, and we have since moved to a Facebook group (and no meetings, due to lack of attendance). It’s grown a lot! And we have some great conversations. My vision isn’t quite reached, but I’m pleased with where it is now.

I started homeschooling Savannah, which has been an adventure. Last year was rough with the new baby arriving in September, but this year we’ve really been getting into it and enjoying ourselves. I have so much to learn still, about the best process for both her and me, but I think we’re getting there. Caroline is in preschool this year to give me a chance to focus on Savannah, but I plan to bring her home next school year for Pre-K.

Last (school) year, we were part of a homeschool co-op with some friends, and I got to teach art. We learned about the elements of art, some famous artists and styles, and played around with lots of different mediums. It was a lot of fun and I loved putting together the curriculum for it. What I didn’t love as much was the actual teaching part – ha! But perhaps I’ll revisit in the future to make some extra money (art classes for homeschoolers). Like I said, last year was rough and I knew I needed to take some stuff off my plate, which is why we are no longer part of the co-op.

I found the transition from two kids to three was really hard. I’m finally over the hump, but for the first 7 or 8 months I felt like I was barely keeping my head above water. I have noticed as my friends have kids, often with the third one is when they “disappear”, and I can see why. I miss who I used to be, but hopefully I’ll get back to the person who’s able to keep her head on straight. ;-) And perhaps along the way I’ve changed for the better too…

I mentioned in my Christmas letter about our house… that has taken up a lot of my energy, especially this past fall. I do plan to go into detail here on the blog later about that. We are in the process of packing up our Christmas stuff and then I’ll take some after pictures and post all the fun details.

I’m trying to think of what I do in my free time, and I’m realizing I am so very busy these days with motherhood and housekeeping. I do spend a lot of time watching Netflix in the evenings. I am still active in our church and our weekly Bible study. I am trying to make new friends with other homeschooling moms, but it’s hard to make friends at this stage in life, I think! We still travel some, but we haven’t been camping as frequently as we used to. We’ll have to remedy that next summer. ;-)

Well this post sounded much more interesting when I was writing it in my head than how it reads now… but I think I’ll leave it for the benefit of all 3 of my readers. ;-)
