A candle in the window

A candle in the window

Last summer, we finished our basement into a cute little apartment/guest suite. I hope to do a post later on that process, but we’ll see. :-) I have always wanted to open up the space to missionaries, as a way to pay it forward to the many, many people who housed our family all the years I was growing up.

In the fall, we had the chance to host some dear friends of ours who are missionaries on furlough. Due to some health issues, they needed a quiet place to crash for a few weeks and we were more than happy to oblige! It was a good chance to give our basement a “test drive”, and they had a great stay! They told me about this Christian hospitality network called A Candle in the Window. It sounded like exactly what I was looking for! I signed up and this weekend we had our first guests!

Everything went wonderfully, and I really enjoyed getting to know them. What a blessing it is to have the chance to open up our home! Being a hostess is not something that comes naturally to me, but I find that having the basement space makes it a lot easier for me. Now I just need to work on being smoother about having guests for dinner. :-)

So I’m curious. What are your favorite meals to serve when having people over? Something that isn’t going to require me to slave in the kitchen all day, and easily serves a larger number of people. (Probably no more than 8-9, since our basement space can’t sleep THAT many people, ha!)

Now I just need to work on getting some artwork on the walls!

  1. Glad you had a great experience with your first guest for A Candle in the Window. It can be fun to host people in this fashion. I also see some changes to the apartment since we were there.

    1. These pictures were actually taken last fall, before y’all visited the most recent time. So it looks a bit different now! I should take some updated pictures.
