Happy Valentine’s Day!
Today when I was at the grocery store, I picked up these:
Hopefully Paul doesn’t see this until he gets home from work. :-)
Paul proposed to me by putting a ring in a tulip, so I thought it was an appropriate flower for Valentine’s Day! I chose purple because it’s my favorite color, hehe. I was going to make some red velvet cake for dessert, but I decided it probably wasn’t a good idea to have a whole cake floating around while I’m trying to lose weight.
(By the way, I reread that blog post from 2004 and wow, I sound like a high schooler. Heh. It’s also somewhat hard for me to read it and know that 3 months later we would break up, followed by many months of heartbreak and sorrow, before we finally were able to get back together and mend our relationship. I am glad that we’re together now!)
It’s been gorgeous today – the thermometer in the car read 60. I took Savannah to the park which she adored; she LOVES the park, especially swinging and sliding. It’s also good exercise for me because the park is about a 20 minute walk from our house. On the way there, a cute little fluffy dog came up and greeted us, which totally made Savannah’s day. She barked for like the next 3 minutes until she got distracted by something else. I love these warmer days, and seeing these flowers just makes me so excited for spring! I’m sure we’ll still have a few more cold spells before it’s really spring, but I’ll take these warm days while I have them. :-)

I thought about making a fancy dessert too but decided against it. It’s so easy to rationalize splurging for a special occasion but then one splurge so often turns into two or three! Arrgh, I miss baking.

I am always amazed when I look back on things I’ve written in the past – some things *never* change (certain struggles, mindsets), and no matter how mature I think I am at the time, something seems immature about it. Go figure.
Since I’ve tried limiting sugar and refined foods, it’s been hard not celebrating with sweets, since that’s what I love to do. My mom gave us some homemade dark chocolate brownies and valentine sprinkles, so I warmed those up and got some ice cream to put on the top, decked with the pretty sprinkles. There were only three brownies, so that wasn’t a big deal… but the leftover ice cream in the freezer has been a temptation!
You could always make smaller batches of goodies. Like, next time you want to make red velvet cake, halve or even quarter the recipe and bake it in a small pan or cupcake tins.
