the diagnosis

the diagnosis

Well today was The Day. After having a horrible week of migraines and other related illnesses (including having to take a half day on Wednesday), I went to the doctor about my migraines. My initial impressions are not that positive. First, we talked a little about my migraines and my history, and he asked me if I noticed them increasing with the consumption of caffeine. I said I didn’t think so, and he then perscribed for me Topamax. That is apparently a pill you take twice a day every day, and it’s supposed to prevent headaches. He then perscribed another medicine, Axert, to take if I ever do get a migraine. In final, he gave me some samples of Rozerem to help me sleep.

After we left, I realized he never asked me about any of the common reasons for migraines. He never asked me about my diet or my sleep patterns (I had to make a special point to tell him), or any of the other common triggers. So I am left confused with 3 1/2 weeks worth of samples and a follow-up appointment when that’s done. Also, I have to get an MRI on Saturday which I have to do some research and figure out if my insurance is going to cover it.

I don’t know what to do.

I really didn’t want to get on meds like this, especially after reading sites like this that talk about some of the side effects being stupidity (making you feel confused, memory loss, etc.). Of course, the doctor explained that this happens more in high-dosage, like what they give to people who suffer from epilepsy. I think the reason why I don’t go to doctors is because I don’t trust them for some reason, and always suspect them of misdiagnosis or something. Or perhaps I’m just wary of medications… Anyways, those are my thoughts. I’m not making sense and I haven’t even started taking it yet!

In other much more exciting news, Becky had her baby this evening! Katherine Anne Miller joined us around 8 pm. I am so excited for all!
