The answer, my friends, is my new system for anti-spam comments! *applause* The way it works is that the first time someone comments, it goes to a little queue where I decide whether to let the comment hit my site or not. If I have approved you for a comment in the past, then it will automatically be accepted. Hopefully that makes sense.

So far this system of blocking spam has been working. I installed Akismet (a spam blocker) about four weeks ago, and it has already caught almost 2500 spam comments. (Isn’t that ridiculous?) It’s soo nice not to worry about having to monitor all the spam, though… I can’t imagine what it would be like if I had 140 comments every time I checked my email in the morning, like that one fateful day last April. Akismet catches ALMOST everything, but I still get 6-8 comments a day that hit my queue. I can usually tell because they’re almost always comments on really old posts.

Most of the comments that Akismet misses are spammers wanting to compliment my site. My favorites are:

I am not making any of them up. :-) I usually get the same comments over and over, as well as some with blantant links to online casinos and places to buy viagra. Oh, yes, and cell phone rings are popular as well.
