quick weekend trip

Posted on

A month or so ago, my brother and sister-in-law mentioned that they were going to be meeting my sister in Asheville for the weekend and wanted to know if I wanted to come too. I considered it, but ultimately decided not to because we were actually just up in Asheville for our anniversary, and we saw Amy then too.

So, AJ and Molly decided to stop in Atlanta and have lunch with us on their way up to North Carolina. At lunch, Molly reminded me that her offer for us to join them still was on the table.

And I was tempted.

Then Paul tells me he has to work on Saturday because he is just swamped these days. And I thought about it, and decided that there weren’t many reasons why I shouldn’t go to Asheville. Besides, I’d get to spend more time with AJ, Molly, Amy, and baby Drew!

It was about 2pm, and I drove home and quickly packed. I also had to finish up a few things for the birth center, and I was out the door by 4pm. I had to stop for gas (the light was on!) and also for some diapers and wipes (I didn’t have enough clean cloth diapers to last all weekend, and didn’t have any sposies on hand). I was done with those errands by 4:30 and I headed for the highway… straight into Friday rush hour traffic. Oops! Forgot about that! Oh well. Between traffic and the horrible rain/hail storm I encountered at the tail end of my trip, it took me about an hour longer to get there, but we made it. Savannah slept most of the way which was really nice!

We had a wonderful weekend. On Saturday I met up with Kesed, a blog friend that I met for the first time a few weeks ago. Her daughter Lyric is only 3 weeks older than Savannah. Lyric also has low muscle tone issues and scooted like Savannah, and didn’t walk until late like Savannah, so Kesed was a definite encouragement to me when I was stressing about that!

Giving Lyric a hug

Savannah is very generous with her hugs – it’s adorable! She’s also generous with her kisses:

This is baby Drew, my brother’s son who is only 12 weeks old! I really enjoyed seeing him again, and also LOVED getting to talk about childbirth, breastfeeding, and parenting with Molly. Our parenting styles are very similar, which is always nice! AJ’s best friend Chad had come along for the trip, and the poor guy kept getting caught in our conversations about all these topics.

Drew is a very happy baby…

And I can’t believe how much Savannah is growing up!

On Saturday evening after everyone was done with their various activities of the day, we went to the McDonald’s by Biltmore because it doesn’t look like a typical McDonald’s – there’s a baby grand piano in the eating area! It was pretty cool. Afterward, we decided to drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway to get some cool pictures of the sunset. I’m pretty happy with the ones I got!

Amy

I love my sister. I pretty much think she’s the awesomest person ever, and I wish I could somehow make it so that she lived close. :-)

Happy Drew!

Drew is absolutely adorable, and I am so jealous of his dimple!! His daddy carried him around in the pouch sling, and that just melted my heart – love babywearing daddies! I can’t wait to watch this little guy as he grows up. I wish they lived closer, too…

I love this picture of Savannah, even though it’s a little dark…
Mommy and Savi

Savi loves her Aunt Amy too. (She calls her “An’ Mamie” – adorable!)

We had a great weekend, and I’m glad I went. I really love Asheville, and the mountains of North Carolina in general. We’ve talked about moving there someday, but not anytime soon because I can’t imagine trying to sell our money pit house in the current economy/market.

Gerig Hall Reunion!

Posted on

We just got back on Monday from our annual trip to Indiana for the Gerig Hall Reunion!!! We had a wonderful weekend. This year, one of the couples hosted at their house. This gave us a few rooms inside for the non-campers, and a lot of space outside for people to pitch a tent. They also had a pool and a fire pit which we all enjoyed. I think it worked out pretty well, and I think most everyone agreed with that.

The group

This year, we had 19 adults and 6 kids attend! (1 adult and 1 kid not pictured above) It was a really lovely weekend, and it’s fun to see people looking forward to and making the effort to come and spend time all together. As we’ve aged, our conversations have moved from reminiscing about Taylor to talk about houses and parenthood, and other grown-up-y subjects.

Here is where we camped:
Our campsite

We had 5 tents outside. It worked out well, aside from the severe thunderstorm we had on Friday night. It was so scary – I laid awake in my tent from 2:30am until 4am, praying furiously and watching with concern as the wind really tested the tent. The storm passed within a few miles from us. That was an experience that really shook me up and I would care never to repeat! (Next time, hotel room is worth the money!) Savannah slept through the whole thing, then as soon as it was over she woke up and started wimpering ad wanted in our sleeping bag. Go figure!

It was fun to get Savannah and Timmy (two days apart) together now that they’re old enough to play together.
More hugs!

"Nigh-nigh!"
One of the things they did was both lay their heads on the towels and say “Night night!” Savannah does that all the time, and it’s so cute to see Timmy doing the same thing. :-)

We enjoyed some card games…

And cooked on the fire pit…

And did a lot of baby passing around (neither person is holding their own child :-))…

My favorite picture from the weekend was this one, of the four moms breastfeeding their babies.
Nursing mamas!!!

One of the moms and her baby had already left by the time we took the picture, or we would have had 5 breastfeeding moms! I realized at one point that all of us are breastfeeders, cloth diaperers, and babywearers… How fun to have those similarities! And we really missed the member of our group who pioneered all these things for us – Beth. (She moved to San Diego! *sniff*)

Fun weekend was had by all, and we’re already looking forward to next year! (See all my pictures here.) Go here to read Joanna’s post, and be sure to scroll down to see an awesome picture of Savannah!!

It’s been a while. Okay, not really, but it feels like it. I’ve been hard at work for two different projects at church. One is a pictorial directory that I designed and took pictures of every family. I’m proud of it… just waiting for a few last-minute submissions and then it will be ready.

The other project was helping with RSVPs and room assignments for a church prayer retreat this past weekend. We got back from it last night. It was… mostly a good time. :-) I had some wonderful and encouraging conversations, and enjoyed getting the chance to get in the word a bit more (there was childcare!). However, we all stayed in a lodge with bunkbeds. Originally Paul and I were going to camp, but the weather turned cold last-minute, so we had to move indoors. (Yeah… when it gets under 40 degrees at night… not a fan of camping!) Staying in a room with 8 other ladies in addition to Savannah and I was not easy. For one, everyone was hyper and went to bed after midnight. The door kept opening and closing as people were coming in and out, and we could not get the girls to settle down (there was another toddler Savannah’s age who was also having trouble!). Finally, the other toddler went to sleep with her daddy because I think their room was already in bedtime mode. Our room, however, was not. The other problem was that there were big fluorescent lights in the room, and when those were off it was pitch black – nothing in between. Normally, we do low-light in the bedroom while I rock her and read a story. We tried the story time, but it was so bright.

After a long time of Savannah crying and me attempting to get her to stay in her bed, I finally brought her in with me. (I didn’t want her in my bed for two reasons – one I was on a twin bed without any rails on either side, and two I was in a sleeping bag.) This resulted in a very restless night for me. She tends to move horizontal as she sleeps, and combined with the awkwardness of the sleeping bag, I was uncomfortable and kept waking up. Also, she kept falling out of bed since there wasn’t much room. Fortunately, the beds were low to the ground so she was never hurt, but it woke both of us up nonetheless. She woke up at 8 which was almost 5 hours less of sleep than she’s used to, and I’m sure you can only imagine how fussy she was during the day. Then naptime came and went and of course there was no way we were going to get her to sleep… Well, we were supposed to stay until 7pm or so, but we left at 3 because I was just so stressed out with her screaming and fussiness. So, the retreat itself was good, but Paul and I decided that we would never try a group lodge with a toddler again. Now we know. :-)

I felt bad for Paul because he didn’t get to hike at all, nor did he get to play with the bonfire like he really wanted. We are busy the next few weekends, but hopefully we get the chance to go camping for real before too long!

i can’t believe it’s been a year

A year ago today, Paul and I woke up at 4am after only three-ish hours of sleep. We took the train to the airport, and got checked in.

Waiting at the Atlanta airport

We boarded a plane for the four hour flight to Santo Domingo!! Savannah cried the whole flight due to her cold making her ears especially sensitive. We arrived and got through customs pretty fast – and Savannah got her first passport stamp!! My first impression of the Dominican Republic was that it was HOT. We took a taxi to the bus station. We drove through Santo Domingo which I enjoyed because it reminded me a lot of Lima.

We then bought bus tickets to Jaracaboa, and left shortly thereafter.

On the bus

It was getting dark when we arrived, walking to the prearranged meeting spot at a nearby bakery. There, we finally hooked up with these people:
Timmy, Tree, Daniel, and Jeremiah

It was a loooong day! (About 14ish hours from the time we left our house.) But so worth it! We had an amazing trip and we are so glad we had the opportunity to visit the beautiful Dominican Republic. It’s hard to believe that the Petersons are no longer living there, as of last week. :-( I do look forward to seeing them again this summer at the Gerig reunion!!

P.S. Happy birthday to Beth today!

pictures from New York City

This post has been sitting in my drafts forever. Not sure why I never posted it… but I hope you enjoy. :-)

Here are some of the pictures from our trip to New York City last October that I took with my real camera. They’re pretty much all from the same day, because I decided just to take pictures with my cell phone after that and not worry about the bulky camera. Unfortunately, I lost all those pictures when I lost my cell phone. :-(

Savannah and I shared the same bed at the hotel room, and it was interesting trying to get her to sleep without turning off the light. But we managed and she was soooo cute asleep.

I wish I had more pictures!
