Firefly roundup

I love it when Firefly is referenced in other TV shows! Last night’s Community is the most recent shout-out. I knew it was coming thanks to this scoop from Michael Ausiello (who is my source for all my TV news):

Question: Any good news you can share about Community’s Annie and Jeff? —Megan
Ausiello: Um, aside from them sharing a couch in a hospital waiting room, there aren’t any Annie-Jeff developments in Thursday’s episode. Jeff does have a memorable encounter with Pierce, however. Oh, and there’s a Firefly reference! For those keeping track at home, that brings to 134 the number of times Joss Whedon’s classic has received a shout-out on a scripted series this season.

And here’s the shout-out:

I have missed many of the 134 references that apparently have occurred, but here are two from The Big Bang Theory from last season:

And of course, probably the most Firefly references come from the man himself, Nathan Fillion! Here’s an excerpt from a recent interview:

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: What was the part about playing the character?
NATHAN FILLION: It was my favorite job ever. What wasn’t great about it? I got to wear a low-slung holster. I got to ride horses. I got to have a spaceship. I got to act mean and curmudgeonly. [Creator Joss Whedon] is really good at kicking characters in the nuts so the other characters would have laughs at my expense and that was great too.

If Castle had its series finale tomorrow and Fox said to you and Joss: “We screwed up, let’s try doing Firefly again.” Would you do it?
Yes. Yes. I would examine very closely Fox’s reasoning — I’m a little gun-shy. If I got $300 million from the California Lottery, the first thing I would do is buy the rights to Firefly, make it on my own, and distribute it on the Internet.

  1. Loved this post! I followed some of the links to other references in Chuck, but I haven’t followed Chuck since the pilot episode and a couple in the first season.

  3. AWESOME! Thanks for putting this together! I had totally missed some of those quoted lines in Castle. I knew the 2 x 2 hands of blue one, the costume, the catalyzer, and the most recent Serenity reference. I had heard about the one on Community. Cool to see those clips.

  4. Yeah! I caught the Serenity reference, but it happened after I wrote this post. I will have to find the Youtube video and update my list. :-)

  5. By the way, Ausiello clarified today that he was exaggerating about there being 134 shout-outs to Firefly. I must admit, I was wondering how I missed so many… :-)
