Dragon*Con parade
Every Labor Day weekend, there is a sci-fi/fantasy convention here in Atlanta called Dragon*Con. For some reason, I never heard about it until last year, and I had a lot of other things going on at the time, so it didn’t occur to me to do anything about it.
This year, though, I found out there’s a PARADE up Peachtree St. in downtown Atlanta. And it’s free to go and watch! I was really excited. I couldn’t find anyone to go with me, so Savannah and I just went by ourselves (Paul was at work). We dressed up in our Firefly costumes from the party we went to last January. I was dressed as Zoe, and Savannah as River. It was a lot of fun! I loved being downtown and see all the people dressed up. The atmosphere was excitement, and I had a blast trying to figure out who people were supposed to be as I passed them on the street. No one said anything to us, but I wasn’t sure if anyone would notice. (I didn’t have Zoe’s vest – Becky still has it and besides it’s hot and NOT breastfeeding friendly. I was wearing the cord around my neck, though! If you’re wondering, here is a picture of Zoe.)
The parade is basically just all the Dragon*Con attendees in costume. There were a few cars – GhostBusters vehicle, Speed Racer, etc. They were grouped by genre. Here is the main reason I went down to the parade: the Browncoats.
I apologize that the video is so shaky. I was holding Savannah and she kept squirming and trying to grab the camera. Also, right as the parade started, some guys stepped into the street in front of me (I was on the curb), blocking my view. I could see the parade okay, but it made it difficult to get good video.
Also, since I was by myself, I couldn’t get video *and* pictures, so I just took video. Afterward, we went to CNN and visited Paul at work. It was fun to hang out with him at his office and eat lunch together. A few of his coworkers were there, so I got to show off Savannah’s costume.
It is absolutely gorgeous here this weekend! The weather is still really warm, but it is not humid so it is very pleasant. I opened a few windows and have let the beautiful breeze in. Now I’m just waiting for Savannah to wake up from her nap so we can go outside. I’m exhausted from this morning, though, so I’ll have to think of something that won’t wipe me out. (I held Savannah the entire duration of the parade! I brought the Ergo but she wanted to watch so I held her. My arms are jelly now!)
Maybe next year we’ll actually *go* to Dragon*Con. :-) This year, the actors who played Kaylee, Inara, River, Simon, and Badger were all there, and I wanted soooo bad to go meet them! I wish I had looked into it more, seeing about getting tickets. Ah, well. Let’s hope they all come back next year. :-)
