Christmas movies

When I first was on my own, I immediately wanted to buy all the DVDs of Christmas movies I grew up watching. I forced myself to buy only two DVDs a year, and I’ve stuck to that for the most part. I really love Christmas movies – I have SUCH fond memories of watching them with my family, and it’s comforting having something that’s repeated every year – a tradition of sorts.

So, here are the Christmas movies I currently have in my collection.

Christmas movies

It’s a Wonderful Life
One of my favorites. Some people find it depressing, but I think that the last 10 minutes of the movie redeem everything. You might think your whole life has been wasted, but in reality you are the richest man in town. I only wish Peter Bailey could see his son and what came of the Building & Loan.

Miracle on 34th Street
Another much-loved classic in my mind (the older version, of course). Natalie Wood is great in this movie. I love the idealistic symbolism of Santa – peace, goodwill, generosity. This movie downplays consumerism and pushes the "true" reason for the season. Of course, they completely miss the actual reason we celebrate – which is the birth of Jesus – but hey, I don’t have a problem with people setting aside a season every year to reflect on loved ones and see humanity for what it is – a world of people just like you and me, who have needs and desires.

White Christmas
This is my absolute favorite. I love Bing Crosby’s voice. This film is chock full of great songs, that my sister and I sing together all the time. ("Sisters, sisters! There were never such devoted sisters…") I love the story, the humor of Danny Kaye and Bing Crosby, and the ending never fails to make me cry. My dream someday is to have a White Christmas (we’re thinking a trip to New England over Christmas might be a good way to make that happen!). Little known fact: the actress who plays the housekeeper Emma also plays Cousin Tillie in "It’s a Wonderful Life".

Holiday Inn
This Irving Berlin movie was actually where the song "White Christmas" debuted. It also starred Bing Crosby, alongside Fred Astaire, and has songs all throughout the year with every major holiday. I like this movie as well, though I prefer "White Christmas". Little known fact: The hotel chain Holiday Inn was named after this movie.

A Charlie Brown Christmas
A definite classic, with a gospel message. What is Christmas about anyways? I love Linus’ monologue. And Charlie Brown’s tree at the end. We had a tree like that growing up in Peru – it was artificial, missing half its branches, but when it was decorated didn’t look half bad. I also have "A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving" , which isn’t as good but I do enjoy the history lesson that’s also on the DVD.

The other DVDs in my collection aren’t really Christmas, but just took place around Christmastime (and I think may have been released in the theaters around Christmas). I enjoy them, though I don’t consider them classics.
Little Women
Stepmom
While You Were Sleeping

What two movies should I get this year? I’m thinking of The Polar Express , mostly because I just really loved the beauty of the film and animation. I also wouldn’t mind getting "Frosty the Snowman" (but only the first one, because I really hated "Frosty Returns" ) and Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer . Any other suggestions?

Christmas cards

I’ve already emailed a bunch of you…

I am working on Christmas cards. If you’d like to get one from me, then please email me your snail mail address! (ashley {@} twentysixcats {dot} com)

Christmas tour of homes

I’m a little late this year. It’s been a crazy week, but thank God it’s over! Now on to more exciting things, like taking pictures of my Christmas decorations! This is my 4th Christmas in Atlanta, and the 4th apartment I’ve decorated (2005, 2006, and 2007). It’s kinda fun to see how the decorations have worked in each place I’ve lived. :-) So I hope you enjoy this little tour of my newest apartment, and be sure to head on over to BooMama’s place for the rest of the tour!

Wreath
Welcome to our home! We have this lovely wreath on our front door to invite you in.

Christmas Tree
I love our Christmas tree! It’s a Frasier fir from North Carolina. Our collection of ornaments has been slowly but surely growing! I’m still looking for a special 2008 ornament, but I’m enjoying remembering all the ones we got the past few years.

Stockings
We hung our stockings above the couch this year. I usually have put them under the breakfast bar, but they didn’t fit there in our new apartment. So, I made my own “mantle” with extra beaded garlands and I think the effect is quite nice! My brothers-in-law make fun of the stockings for the kitties.

Nativity scene
The nativity scene, being displayed prominently on the breakfast bar. I like it here, in the center of everything.

Jesse Tree
Our Jesse Tree.

birthday tree
My birthday tree. My grandmother gave this to me years and years ago, so that I wouldn’t feel left out at Christmas. (My birthday is December 26th.) It’s on the coffee table now.

Poinsetta
A fake poinsettia (real ones are bad for kitties) and a bit of decoration. This strip of cloth has hung over the narrow windows we had in our last two apartments, but in this apartment I draped it over the side of a bookcase. I like the effect!

Porch
You can see the Christmas tree from outside. Also, I decorated the porch with red lights, a garland, and white icicle lights.

And last but not least, the kitties have special holiday costumes to share with you!
Ebony the Reindeer

Lewis
They were thrilled to be wearing their new headware and getting pictures taken. Can’t you tell??

Thanks for stopping by! I hope you enjoyed the little tour, and I hope everyone has a very Merry Christmas!

recently

Life has been busy. A bullet list, for your reading pleasure.

  • It’s tough going from working not at all, to working full-time. The good news is almost immediately I started sleeping again. However, I’ve been very exhausted at the end of the day – moreso than I normally am when I’m working full-time.
  • My boss strongly hinted that he’d like me to come back regularly. After much thought, I decided to offer part-time – 3 days a week – on a regular basis, instead of full-time every so often. My boss was really excited and said that we’d work something out. So we’ll see what my schedule looks like after Christmas. :-)
  • My evenings this week have been consumed with Christmas parties and choir practice. We have 4 Christmas parties this week! I had to miss the one today, but we’ll definitely make the ones tomorrow night and Saturday night. We also have a Christmas party at some point next week.
  • This weekend is our Christmas concert at church, and it’s also a worship weekend. LOTS of singing! We’ve already had practice two evenings this week, and on Saturday and Sunday we will be at the church for a total of over *13* hours singing. Wow. My throat is tired just thinking about it!
  • I am exhausted by these three things – work, parties, and singing.
  • We *STILL* don’t know if Paul has any time off for Christmas yet. His boss has said several things to him like, how flexible are your vacation plans, and would it be okay if you didn’t get off as much time as you asked for, and can you work the 23rd and 24th. SOOO….
  • After talking about it, we decided that I would fly to Orlando, and Paul would drive down with the cats later when he gets off work. There were several reasons for this, but mostly I’m glad I don’t have to drive on Christmas Day! It will be nice to spend some quality time with my family. I miss them. I booked my ticket tonight – I leave on the 21st.
  • We also took advantage of an incredible deal on AirTran and got tickets to visit someone. I can’t wait to talk about it here, but I have to wait until we actually inform the person we’re visiting them. In case they read my blog, and I don’t want them to find out from here. But I’m excited and y’all will have to wait. And if you saw me mention it in my Facebook status, then don’t spoil anything here.
  • So with all this buying-plane-tickets madness, I happened to check my bank account. The one that is our second bank account, that we use as a savings account, that we rarely check except for making big purchases like plane tickets. Well… lesson learned… I should have checked it regularly. We found three very large transactions that neither of us made that totalled $2,000.
  • Paul, the aspiring detective, and I have been deducting what we think happened. Here’s our theory:
  • Nov. 6th we mailed a check to the IRS to pay for taxes. (I know it was late. I have no idea why I didn’t pay them when I filed my return in April – I’m still confused about that one.) We put it in the mail slot at our apartment complex, and then forgot about it. That check has never been cashed. (Something we discovered tonight.)
  • Three checks were written for increasingly larger amounts at Targets and Walmarts, starting really close to us on Nov. 12th, and getting farther away (but still near Atlanta) with a space of two weeks between each.
  • The checks had numbers that succeeded the check number of the check to the IRS. Too coincidental. Someone (neighbor, someone who worked at our complex, or the mailman) saw a letter addressed to the IRS in November and assumed a check would be inside. They stole the letter/check, made replicas, and are now trying to clean out my bank account.
  • If Criminal Minds and Numb3rs have taught me anything, then we can expect another attempt next week. Paul even has the town he expects them to hit picked out!
  • I have to call the bank tomorrow. And the IRS. Because now, our taxes are even LATER. And that means we owe even MORE interest. Anything I can do to help the government continue to throw money at people who make stupid decisions. I’m an American, after all.
  • I am slightly worried about the plane tickets we bought, that dealing with this will cause our ticket order to be cancelled. Need to figure out how to prevent that from happening.
  • I really, really hate having to deal with this. Sigh. I’m anticipating the worst.
  • So a day of highs and lows. Hopefully tomorrow is better. If I go to sleep now and wake up on Monday, then I will be happy.

this made me cry

I saw this video on Aurelia Ann’s blog. It made me cry, and the singer really put into words what I’ve been feeling, since my miscarriage and just this past year in general. I know so many people, and many of my friends, are struggling with the same thing right now – even moreso than I am. It just hurts your heart.

And for those of you who have kids, I hope you give them extra hugs tonight and thank God for the blessings He’s given!
