input needed: printers

lexmark.jpgAbout 3 years ago, I got a cheap Lexmark inkjet printer. It died two years later and we have since been printer-less. However, we’re getting to the point where not having one is extremely inconvenient, and so we’ve decided to get a new one. We’re not necessarily in a rush (like I said, we’ve been without a printer this long, we can go a bit longer), but sooner is better than later.

So, if you have a printer that you like (or one you don’t like), could you let me know what you think of it? Where would be the best place to buy a printer? We’re trying to balance cost and quality. We’ll go with cost over quality, but I’d rather not have to buy another printer two years down the road.

Requirements:

  1. It needs to print in both black & white and color.
  2. We don’t need a fancy photo printer or fax machine.
  3. It would be great if it had one of those copiers built in. We already have a scanner.
  4. The cost of the ink is a definite consideration. Does it take generic brands? Does the cost of the ink exceed the value of the printer?

So, any recommendations from those of you who have printers?
