El Condor Pasa

(Another post that’s been in my drafts for over a year!)

Over a year ago, I bought a two CD set of the best of Simon & Garfunkel. I really enjoy their music and some of their songs have really interesting messages. I meant to blog about several of them, but alas I have a feeling this is the only post that will get written at this point. :-)

For those of you who are familiar with Simon & Garfunkel’s music, you might recognize a song called El Condor Pasa (If I Could). The first verse of the lyrics go:
I’d rather be a sparrow than a snail
Yes I would, if I could, I surely would
I’d rather be a hammer than a nail
Yes I would, if I only could, I surely would

Okay, not incredibly deep. ;-) I would have passed this song by, except that something caught my ear. I listened to the tune and instruments and turned to Paul and said, “This sounds like a Peruvian song!” (You can listen to the Simon & Garfunkel version here.)

I did a little digging and found out that the music is indeed a Peruvian song, written almost a century ago! (The lyrics of the Simon & Garfunkel cover version were written by Paul Simon.*) I thought that was so cool, and it’s so much fun to hear the Peruvian sounds again.

Here is a video of the Peruvian instrumental version, with images from Peru and of the instruments that are used in this song and also what gives Andean folk music its distinctive style. Ah, it takes me back… I feel like I should be drinking a nice tall glass of chicha morada right now and smelling the pachamanca cooking! Please enjoy this bit of cultural music from the country where I grew up.

* I do want to point out that there is some controversy as to whether Paul Simon used the music without permission. You can read more on the Wikipedia entry for this song.

summer winding down

We are usually pretty busy in the summers. We pack our weekends with camping and traveling, usually to weddings and/or reunions. This summer has been a very different summer for us because the traveling ended in the middle of June and so did the camping. :-( (I would like to point out that I’m very proud of myself for tent camping in my third trimester. I bet not a lot of moms can say that!) For me, this summer has been significant because it has meant “get ready for the baby”. In some ways it’s nice to have a baby due at the end of the season; as summer activities are winding down, so is my energy. Fall things are gearing up but I’ve been very hesitant to make any sort of commitment.

I’m moving really slowly these days. The past two weeks or so especially – I find that scheduling more than one activity a day is really pushing my energy endurance! I struggle to walk any period of time, and when I do I walk so slowly. Poor Paul is always having to adjust his stride to be able to walk next to me. It’s been frustrating because I want to get out of the house but I’m really not up for anything. In the past week I’ve felt my body changing. I can’t explain it really – just feeling things that are obviously baby-related but not baby movements. (Braxton-Hicks perhaps? I can’t tell.) My midwife told me that it’s my cervix and pelvis getting ready.

Today I stopped by the pediatrician I found and got to meet her and some of the office staff. I really liked her a lot! My biggest question was about vaccinations – I know I don’t want the hepatitis B vaccine, and I haven’t made up my mind about all the others yet. This practice is very willing to work with parents, and I was happy to hear that. I am excited to have that crossed off my list, and to have found someone who right now I feel comfortable with.

I’ve been feeling a little on the lonely side these days, since I am home all day. I was afraid this would happen – one of the negatives of staying home full-time! So I have tentatively added a few lunch dates to see friends one last time before the baby comes. I hope that gets me enough people time to last to the end of this pregnancy and the beginning of life with a newborn before I can get out and see people again! This is my extrovert side coming out. :-)

Also on the forefront of my mind is my cat Lewis, who continues to not eat but the vet has no idea what’s wrong. I am worried if he’s behaving like this now, what is it going to be like when we bring a baby home? We are also still waiting to hear if we’re going to be able to buy this house we’ve had our eye on. I put a little countdown on our sidebar, to keep track of how long it’s been! As of today, it has been 3 months and 14 days since we put in the initial offer on the house (on May 5th). We are so close to being able to get the keys! At this point, it seems more likely that we WILL get it, unless we decide to walk away for whatever reason. Let me tell you, I don’t know that I would ever pursue another short sale again. I mean, the price is great, but this has just been one hassle after another. I plan to write another post about this when all is said and done. In the meantime, I stress about what will happen if our apartment lease is up and the selling bank is still “thinking” (it’s a long story). And knowing that we could be moving and having a baby in the next month is stressing me a lot too. (I stress easily.)

I think that’s about it for now. I have to go wash some diapers. I ordered a “Try It” kit of prefolds, so now I have some of those and some pocket diapers. We’ll figure out later which ones I like better. :-) In the meantime, I have all the newborn disposable diapers I’ve gotten so far all arranged nicely on the bathroom counter (the changing area). I got some baskets from Goodwill and everything looks all nice and neat and ready for baby! Nearby I have all the pocket diapers stuffed and ready to go, and I’ll add the prefolds to that stack when I finish washing them. I should take a picture, because I’m sure this is the last time everything is going to look this great, right?

a little chat

Sorry for all the new posts recently! I think I posted too quickly after my “best of…and questions” post and didn’t get a lot of comments. :-) So be sure to check that one out if you missed it!

I am about 2 1/2 weeks from my due date now. Yikes, it’s so close! I don’t feel ready at all, but at the same time I know I’ll be okay. I think part of me is in somewhat mourning of the end of the life Paul and I have had together these past three years. I mean, it’s exciting to enter this new stage, but at the same time I really enjoyed the last stage too. I did this same thing when we got married; isn’t that silly? I guess while I enjoy change, I also miss the stability of my routine.

I am in my weekly visits to the midwife now. It’s nice seeing her every week, because I have lots of questions. :-) I don’t know if I ever said what happened with my midwife leaving my old practice… I switched to a different practice that my friend recommended, and I’ve been really happy. She told me at my appointment last Monday that the baby has dropped head-down into my pelvis and so that’s good! I was wondering about all the discomfort I was feeling. :-)

My computer (the desktop) has been really driving me nuts lately; the most recent thing is Photoshop keeps opening for no reason and I can’t seem to get it to close. (Every time I close it, it automatically opens again.) Restarting didn’t help, so I decided to switch to the laptop. We’re going to reinstall Windows on the desktop soon and I’m so excited! The only thing we’re waiting on is a method of backing up all our my files. Paul had to go buy a bigger external harddrive for all my files – mostly, my pictures. Once that arrives I’ll put my files there then Paul will reinstall Windows and everything will be happy! I really hope this gets rid of my mouse issues and Firefox’s resizing of webpages, and this whole weird Photoshop thing that’s started recently. Oh and we found out that our USB problems were actually because of our USB port and not Vista. So we’re going to get another port thingy and that should be happy too.

Paul found our old webcam and I hooked it up to Skype because I anticipate that the grandparents will want to see the baby after she arrives. :-) I’ve been trying to find people to Skype to test and see if the camera is working okay, but I’ve been unsuccessful so far. I feel like it’s been hard to get a hold of people recently! End of summer is really busy – I know for us it usually is.

Our summer activities are winding down. Kids here in Atlanta started school last Monday, so it’s been quieter outside. We took a Dave Ramsey class this summer, and we only have a few classes left of that. The birth class we’re taking is winding down, too, which is good considering that the due date is so close! ;-) I actually am supposed to be researching topics for the class tonight to give a 5 minute talk on the pros/cons. But… well really, I haven’t changed since high school or college, and I am once again waiting until the last minute to start my homework. ;-)

Well I should probably go and start tackling my to do list. I was unable to sleep last night, so I ended up sleeping until noon and now I feel like I’m just starting to wake up and get moving! (It’s 2pm!) I need to make a few phone calls, and go buy stamps for thank you notes, and do my birth class homework. Other stuff can wait until tomorrow I think. Or midnight tonight, as that seems to be my new alert time.

my 25 things

I love stuff like this. I wrote this for Facebook back at the end of January, and always intended to post it here but am just now getting around to it. I do want to add to it and make it my “about me” page (replacing my current outdated “100 things“). But… that will come later. ;-) Anyways, enjoy my 25 random things!

1. I never know where to start on these things. Writing the opening paragraph for an essay was also the hardest part, I thought.

2. My front two teeth are fake. I broke them off diving into a pool in 10th grade. As I’ve aged, it’s gotten more noticeable, but I don’t have $2000 to spend on making them pretty again. Maybe someday.

3. Sometimes I dream about what I would do if I won the lottery. I usually feel very generous in those dreams. The funny thing is, I never play the lottery.

4. I feel sad when stores go out of business, even if I never shopped there.

5. I constantly quote Gilmore Girls. Love that show; I’ve seen most episodes multiple times.

6. I really love being outdoors, camping and hiking. I plan to camp as much as I can this spring/summer even though I’m having a baby in August.

7. I can’t see very much without glasses or contacts. I always take my glasses off when I eat.

8. (Removed for privacy reasons!)

9. I like cold showers in the summertime. (Not freezing, but with the hot water turned on just slightly.) I find it refreshing.

10. I love the South, where winter lasts for a month or two. I get antsy to get outdoors again.

11. I love cats. If I ever had to choose between my husband and my cats, it would be a hard choice. (I’d choose him, of course, but it would be hard.)

12. Paul and I are watching through AFI’s list of 100 movies. It’s been interesting.

13. I hate the question “where are you from” because I never know how to answer.

14. I really loved college, but I didn’t like living in Indiana. I’m glad I did it for a time, though, so I can know that I never want to live in the cold.

15. Sometimes I pick fights with friends because I don’t know how to keep a friend for more than a few years.

16. I got my first speeding ticket a few weeks ago. My perfect record – ruined! *sigh*

17. I’m really good about remembering numbers. Back before address books on phones, I used to know all my friends’ numbers by heart. I’m great with dates, too.

18. I don’t care much about college football, but if I’m going to root for a team than it has to be Florida Gators. Unfortunately, I don’t know any other Gators fans except my family.

19. I have a weird obsession with odd numbers. I think they’re so much more visually pleasing than even numbers.

20. I always try to attend weddings I am invited to, even if the timing is inconvenient or the distance is great. It’s really important to me.

21. Paul and I are both huge fans of the tv show Firefly. We think it’s our mission to convert other people as well. We want to go to a Firefly party sometime dressed as Wash and Zoe.

22. I am really excited about homeschooling our future children. I am genuinely worried that our country is going to pass laws that make it difficult or illegal to homeschool.

23. I like to talk a lot, and can dominate conversations if I’m not careful. Evenings in our home consist of me prattling on and Paul just listening. I’m glad he’s not a talker.

24. I’m really close to my mom and I talk to her almost every day on the phone. I wish we lived closer and could see her more often.

25. One of my lifelong dreams is to visit Greece. I hope we make it there to visit!

Gerig Reunion 2009

I’m working through my drafts, trying to get them finished and published. It’s good to see some of them finally posted! Also, most of them are non-baby related, so that’s a nice change from the current posts. ;-)

I’ve been meaning to write a recap about the Gerig Hall reunion this year, as I’ve done with every other year (2007, 2008). This year was really great; we had a good turnout including a number of people who came for the first time! We decided that the beginning of June worked best for people. Last year, we had an August reunion (end of summer) and we found that for several people, the summers got extremely busy by then. So we’ll focus more on June in the future.

The cooking/eating area

We camped at one of the group sites at Brown County State Park in Indiana. I really like those sites, because it’s basically a big grassy field with a few picnic tables scattered around, and you can set up your tents wherever. We spent most of our time hanging around the fire pit in our camp chairs, except during the heat of the day when we retreated to the shady area where some of the other picnic tables were.

Anna, Frankie, and Brent

Finishing up breakfast

A few people had brought games, so games of Euchre, Fluxx, and Apples to Apples quickly took over various picnic tables. Everyone seemed to have a great time. Ann brought a watermelon that she cut up for everyone, which was much enjoyed by people who like that fruit – I would not be one of those people. ;-) A game of Ultimate was attempted, but there wasn’t enough interest. Perhaps next year…! Most everyone went hiking, except for a few of us who were pregnant or wanted to hang out with the pregnant ladies. ;-)

Socializing around lunchtime

Apples to Apples

Speaking of pregnant ladies, we had two this year! :-) We were all surprised that at 39 weeks along, Beth was brave enough to make the 2 1/2 hour trip to hang out with us for the day! She did great but I definitely noticed that she wasn’t quite as peppy as she normally is. It was great to see her.

Hi, Beth!

Joanna, me and Sara

(This is the only picture I have of me.) I was 6 months along at this point – it was actually my first week in my third trimester! Haha I bet not very many women go tent camping in their third trimester. :-) That part ended up being fine. I had brought lots of pillows and sleeping wasn’t a problem. I did join any group of girls walking to the bathroom, which was probably good exercise for me, and it really wasn’t as much of a pain as I anticipated. The hardest part actually was in setting up and taking down the tents/campsite. Poor Paul ended up having to do a lot by himself. It was partly the heat – it wasn’t really that hot, but there was no relief in the middle of the day on Sunday when we packed to leave (no air conditioning!).

Overall, I think we all had a really great time. It was so encouraging to me that people were talking about looking forward to the reunion, and also about wanting to make the effort to come to not only this reunion but future reunions as well. Some people traveled great distances – Melissa, and Sopeak and Zay all drove from Texas. Zay had to work on the Friday before the reunion, so she and Sopeak left Texas after she was done, arriving at the campsite at 5am! It was so great to see all of them. Melissa normally lives overseas but was in the States for a few months, so it worked out for her to come and it was SO great to see her again! Joanna came all the way from her home in Florida. It was her first time attending and we were all so glad she was able to make it! Matt and Alisse weren’t interested in camping, so they stayed at a nearby cabin so we were still able to see them all weekend which was really wonderful! It was so great to see every person who came, and I hope everyone is able to come back next year!

The whole gang

All total, we had 20 adults plus 2 kids (and 2 babies in utero!). The weekend passed all to quickly. As opposed to other years, people mostly hung around on Sunday, not in any rush to get home. We actually stayed at the campsite talking until late afternoon, where we joined several other people at Ann and David’s nearby apartment for dinner! It was nice to continue hanging out, especially indoors. ;-) Paul and I of course stayed up late and were the last to leave – that is our M.O. after all! (You can see all my pictures from the reunion on Flickr.)

It was a wonderful, refreshing weekend and I really can’t wait until October when we go up to Indiana again for Isaac’s wedding, and we get to see a lot of people again! Actually, our hope is to actually go back to Taylor’s campus – we haven’t been there since my graduation in 2005. We are craving some Ivanhoe’s!

We’ve already started plans for next year’s reunion. We’re hoping to actually rent out Gerig Hall (or rather, 2G) and have everyone stay there. We’re still working on logistics, but the tentative date is June 11-13th. So if you’re interested in coming let me know so I can include you on the mass email list whenever I start sending those out (sometimes this fall/winter). :-) It will be tons of fun to revisit the dorm, hang out in the lounge like the “old days”, and – most of all – have BOYS in our college dorm room – overnight! ;-) (We’re such a wild bunch.)

Ah, friends. This was the best part of college, hands down.
