our den – finished!

The den was a HUGE project in our house. It was on our list to finish when we moved into the house last fall, but it seemed silly to spend the money on that when there were lots more immediate things. My plan for the room was to make an area that was 100% kid safe and child proofed. I hope to see it become the playroom (with the toys contained downstairs!). We don’t really have furniture for it right now, but in the future I envision getting something like a sectional with a hide-a-bed for slumber parties and overnight guests (after we have more kids and the guest room becomes just a bedroom). One thing I love is that it is only a few steps down from the kitchen, so I can keep an eye on the kids while cooking dinner. We still need to get baby gates; hopefully soon.

After trying to make an office area work upstairs, I gave up and decided to move it down to one corner of the den. It’s not exactly kid-proof, so I hope to get some of those playyard baby gates or something to section off the area. I’ve been scouring Craigslist for them, so whenever I find some at a good price I’ll snatch them up. :-)

Here is a picture of one side of the den from when we bought the house:
Family room

The carpet was the first to go – it was damp and smelled horrible. It became a sort of junk room for about 6 months when, in March, my sister came down for a week and helped us paint. It took 4 coats of paint to cover the dark paneling! We put 2 coats of Kilz on it to help with the mustiness and possible mildew in the room. The room definitely had a basement feel to it. We then put on a few coats of the same yellow we used throughout the house.

Painting our den - first coat

We also ripped out the fake fireplace, and hope to put a pantry in there. That’s Paul’s project, and will be nice for storing stuff since we don’t have a pantry in the kitchen. I had originally thought I wouldn’t worry too much about the built-in shelves, but when I pulled out the white paint I thought I’d just go ahead and give them a nice coat. I’m glad I did! I didn’t realize how disgusting those shelves were! I washed them, too (before painting), and they look so much better. I wish I’d gotten a picture of a shelf half painted so you could see how gross they were!

After painting, we waited another few months until we had the money to put in carpet. That became an adventure in of itself! We finally got the carpet in, and so far we have been loving it! We also replaced all the baseboards (in an attempt to remove everything with cat pee).

Pulling up asbestos tiles

Hard at work

We also did a few other smaller things: we replaced all the plugs in the room, because the old ones were brown (to match the paneling). There was an A/C vent and an air return that we got covers for – the return was a different size than I guess they make now, because getting a cover for it was really hard! I ended up having to buy one a few inches too big but it works. Little things like that really help finish a room!

Installed Nov. 1968

I took out the accordion door that went from the den to the laundry room. Once the room was painted, the brown door looked a little weird. Also it made it impossible to put a baby gate in the door way, and the door itself wouldn’t latch. I looked into other types of doors and decided our best bet was to just leave it open, even though now you can see the laundry area.

We replaced the ceiling light and ceiling fan. The old lights were mismatched and outdated, and the fan was too small for the room. So, I picked up something that looked nicer and have been pretty happy. However, I will say, I think it might be worth paying more for a nicer ceiling fan. We bought the cheapest we could find and I definitely notice a difference between this fan and the ones upstairs in our bedrooms (that came with the house). Fans are just so expensive, though!

As you can see we have learned a lot about houses from this room alone! A year ago, we did not know anything about carpet, tiles, sealing cement floors, tree roots, replacing electrical outlets, replacing lights and fans, and baseboards.

And now for some pictures!
Our den/playroom

Our den/playroom

Our den/playroom

As you can see, we’re still figuring out the arrangement but I like all the space to play on the floor. The only other thing I want to do is do something with the curtains. These are kind of ugly, but I’m not really sure what to replace them with. The windows are very close to the top of the room because of this part of the house being partially underground, so I think the normal panel curtains look a little silly. I don’t want curtains that go to the floor because of it being a playroom. Perhaps blinds? I’m still thinking about it. In the meantime, I’m really happy with how this room has turned out! And the living room looks much better now that we moved some of the furniture downstairs.

Next up: finalize room layouts and hang pictures throughout the house!

the friends you make in college…

People have told me, “The friends you make in college are the friends you have for life.” Boy, has that been true for me!

Because Paul and I live so far from where we went to college, we don’t get to see our college friends very often. Once we stopped going to weddings every summer, we realized that we missed seeing our friends, so I decided to organize an annual reunion for all of us to get together. My dad also went to Taylor, and I have memories of driving up to Indiana every summer to see his college friends. I’ve been inspired to do the same. Most of our friends also lived in the same dorm (Gerig Hall) as us – in fact, there are only a few non-Taylor spouses.

The past 3 years we’ve gone camping, but this year I was able to arrange it so we were able to stay in Gerig Hall! We all got together this past weekend, and had SO much fun! We will definitely do it there again (but not every year because it is a little expensive). It was amazing how much little things took me back – as if I had never left. Everything just seemed so right. While I know that we always need to move on, I really miss those college days!

We all met in Gerig Hall lounge on Friday afternoon. I wasn’t sure what to expect, because my contact at Taylor wasn’t very good at answering my questions, but I was really pleased with everything. Paul and I got to Taylor a bit early and went to the library where I used to work. We spent some time talking with the staff there, introducing them to Savannah. I was hoping to also go by the bookstore, but we ended up not having enough time (which was probably just as well for our pocketbooks!). We went over to Gerig and picked up our keys, then walked around the dorm to see what had changed. Not much – they did add a sprinkler system which meant exposed pipes all through the hallways and suites, and looked weird to me!

People started arriving an hour later and I got really excited! We decided to all go to a local restaurant and ice cream place for dinner – Ivanhoe’s. My excitement grew even more when Joanna casually told me that she was expecting a baby! Yeah I think I was bouncing off the walls at this point! We had a wonderful dinner, even though it was really crowded. Afterward, we went back to Gerig and hung out in the lounge.

A group (including Paul, but not me) went on an IHOP run on Saturday morning, which was about 7 hours later than the normal IHOP runs in college, but I guess we’re old and used to normal mealtimes now. Meanwhile, Tree and I took a walk around campus trying to get our babies (Timmy and Savannah) to sleep – with all the commotion and activity, morning naps were just not happening! The past 3 years we’ve had two kids, but this year we had 6! This is the first year Tree and her family were able to come (they planned their visit to the States so they would be able to attend the reunion), and we had a total of THREE babies born last summer! In fact, last summer Beth was 39 weeks pregnant and I was 28 weeks pregnant during the reunion. I interrupt this narrative with a belly shot from last year:
Two pregnant ladies

And an updated shot taken this weekend:
Last year, we were preggo... this year, babies!

We were supposed to eat lunch on Saturday at the dining commons where we shared so many meals during our college years, but a few days before the reunion I found out the dining commons were closed for renovations. They were still serving meals, but the choices were minimal and it would definitely not be the same experience that we had while in college. I decided instead just to get pizza for everyone, which I think worked out pretty well. We enjoyed pizza together and then headed off to the lake for the afternoon.

Laughter over lunch

We were at the lake for the majority of the afternoon and evening on Saturday. I think for most of us, we spent more time at the lake this weekend than we had the whole time we were students there! The kids loved playing in the water. I unfortunately had forgotten my suit, so I couldn’t get in the water, but Savannah had a blast splashing (as normal). A few people also took advantage of the canoes and pedal boats that were available.

The most time we spent at the lake than our 4 years as students!

At one point, Paul wandered off with Savannah and they found some mulberry bushes. He came back later and said to the group (and me included), “We had an accident.” I looked up and gasped loudly:
"We had an accident." (It was really just mulberries!)

Then I realized that Paul had just been feeding Savannah the mulberries! My fear quickly dissipated and I laughed with everyone else. I think Savannah enjoyed her snack!

That evening, we were supposed to have a bonfire, but the clouds were threatening in the sky. We opted just to light the grill instead and have our cookout before the rain came. We had a lovely cookout together, and just as we finished, the storm moved in quickly. I have never seen a group move so fast to get everything cleaned up and get back to the dorm before it started pouring! We made it just in time, too.

That evening, we pulled out the games and hung out in the lounge. It was so much fun, and when I wandered around the lounge it felt like no time had passed at all. I was reminded of the many, many late nights where I’d walk that same path, and hear the same sounds – nighttime chatter of people hanging out in the lounge, laughter from certain people, silliness as it got later and we all got tireder.

We rounded up enough people to have a rousing game of Mafia (description and rules here, for those who are unfortunate not to be familiar with such an awesome game!). Mafia is special to me because that’s how I first met a lot of the people I am now so close to. I remember first meeting Tree from playing Mafia with her – “And the Gerig is hanging from Gerig!” And most importantly, Paul – “I’m not Mafia – I don’t have a beard anymore!” Frankie did a great job as the narrator, and I think all of us had a great time.

Mafia in the Passion Pit

As people went to bed, a few of us stayed up late talking. I think I went to bed around 4am! Ah, just like college. (And when Savannah woke me up at 8:30, it was just like me having to get up for class!) Before we went to bed that night, we went through the lounge, cleaning up and turning off lights. How often did we do that when we lived there?

The next morning (Sunday), we packed up and started heading out. It was sad to see the weekend ending. I convinced a few people to join us at Frankie’s house nearby, where we had lunch and swam in their pool. I was able to borrow a suit and get in the pool with Savannah, which she loved (of course). It was a great way to wind down the weekend. We then said our goodbyes and drove about an hour south to Indianapolis, where we stayed the night with Paul’s best friend and college roommate, Isaac, and his wife. We had a delightful evening with them, and the next morning we drove home. It took us 10 1/2 hours, which was an hour better than the drive up. (We got caught in Bonnaroo traffic on the way up the previous Thursday – note to self, whenever traveling I-24 in June, always check to see if Bonnaroo is that weekend! If so, take a different route to Indiana!)

I can’t wait until next year’s reunion. I am so glad to know these awesome people, and I’m so grateful that they all make the effort to come! I value their friendships so much. It’s definitely the recharge I needed this summer… Too bad they all live so far away that I only get to see them once a year!

The whole gang!

adding to our list

The arrival of summer has shown us a few more issues with our house that we’ll need to take care of. First off, it’s really really hot in here! I have the A/C on, and the thermometer reads that it’s only 78 or 80 inside, but sweat is just pouring off me! I don’t tend to be warm by nature, so I am wondering why.

I have a theory but I’m not sure how accurate it is. Our house is really humid – it’s not vented properly so we have had some issues with humidity even in the winter. I notice it mostly with the windows – mold builds up on the frame, so we have to keep cleaning them with bleach (like, every 6 months… it’s not REALLY bad). Humidity doesn’t really bother us much (heck, we live in Atlanta) but now that it’s summer my guess is that it’s REALLY humid inside. And that is making it feel much hotter than it is. What do you think of my theory? Plausible or totally off-base?

It could also be an issue with our A/C. The inspector told us that it was hooked up wrong, and we would need to get a professional out to take a look at it. Worst case scenario, we need a new unit, but I don’t think that will be necessary right now. I need to get someone out here; I’m just worried about the cost.

The biggest thing that will help with the humidity will be to put in attic vents. Our inspector last year told us that the easiest way to do that will be to get them put in when we reroof the house, which is still a few years away (hopefully!). I know putting a vapor barrier in the crawlspace will help, too – we’ll get that done when we fix the foundation. Any other ideas of bringing down the humidity in the house, short of putting a dehumidifier in every room?

I already mentioned the mosquitoes we’ve been having trouble with. Not sure what to do about that, either. What are the things that make those pesky bugs worse. Standing water? Tall weeds? We need to try and figure that out. It’s worse around our carport, so that’s a place to start.

We have been daydreaming recently about what we want to do with our yard. Those of you privy to my Facebook updates will know that we have some trouble with people walking through our yard since it’s a corner lot. Also, the way our house is situated, our side yard is actually the biggest area and probably where our kids will play. I’d love to have some sort of natural barrier along the sidewalk to keep our kids in and unwanted people out – perhaps some poplar trees?

We’d love to get our yard to a place where we can spend time outdoors. Keeping the bugs to a minimum is key, but also making it a nice place to be will help. We talked today about tilling the whole backyard (there isn’t a blade of grass, only weeds) and planting grass. Someday, someday! There are some things we need to think about first, like how to divert the water from pooling in our yard when it rains. I really know nothing about landscaping so what I have in my head might not even be possible. We’ll see!

Today with the help of some friends we moved a few pieces of furniture downstairs. I am excited! We also moved down our desktop computer to the den, and a few other miscellaneous items. I’m trying to turn a corner of the den into a small office, and the rest of the den will be a playroom. I think it’s going to be a really nice living space when we’re done! I told Paul that I’d like to make the living room upstairs a nice place to have guests and entertain, and the den a place where we can relax and let the kids have fun.

I look forward to working on making the living room look nice decor-wise. Though, I’m about out of money so I better start coming up with inexpensive solutions. :-)

random tidbits for tonight

Some random tidbits, because I feel like blogging but don’t really have anything to say…

* We went to Lowe’s today and picked up some stuff. Man, we spend a lot of money there and Home Depot! My uncle is going to help out with a few projects on Saturday, which will be nice. We got the new light and ceiling fan installed in the den, and bought the baseboards tonight. We just need to install those and that room will be done! Pictures will come at that point. :-)

* One of my good friends is a physical therapist for children, and she’s given me some pointers to helping Savannah develop her upper arm strength. It’s a little concerning that at 9 months old, Savannah has no interest at all in moving around. I know she’s fine physically; we just need to work with her to encourage her to use her arms more. My friend has been really helpful!! We might need to pursue more structured therapy if she still isn’t moving in a few months. I’m not worried; I just hate having to do this because Savannah cries and cries! She HATES being on her tummy, and she HATES when I try to encourage her to roll over. She screams and screams, and just goes limp… I hope this stage lasts a short time because I feel so horrible!

* Our house smells weird and I can’t place it. I think it’s the humidity bringing out some smells. Our house isn’t vented properly so it’s super humid inside (we have trouble with mold growing on our window panes!). We’ll get that fixed when we get a new roof, but hopefully we have a few more years before we need a new one and so we’ll have to put up with it for the time being. Anyways, my goal is to do a major spring cleaning and hopefully make the whole house smell nice and fresh again. But not all at once, because that would be overwhelming!

* We got a mattress for Savannah’s crib! We set up the crib in her room, and she has been napping in there! I have found that if I don’t turn on music while she naps, then she doesn’t sleep as long. So, I am looking for a cheap MP3 player for her. I have been resisting giving her too many sleep aids because I don’t want to have to lug tons of stuff with us when we travel, but an MP3 player is nice and portable, and if it will help her sleep then I’m all for it!

* Now that we’re using Savannah’s room more, I am trying to think of decor. I want to make a skirt for the crib to hide all the boxes we put underneath, and I’d love to have matching curtains. Her walls are a really light purple, the trim in the room is white, her changing table is white, and the crib is a natural light wood. So I’m trying to figure out what colors to use for the curtains/crib skirt that will match what is currently there, but is also gender neutral. I still am interested in a lamb-theme, but not sure how to tie all of that together. So I’m stuck.

* I’ve been reading “Last Child in the Woods“, which has been interesting especially as we’re at the beginning of summer (and our camping season). I have a lot of desire to incorporate the outdoors with our kids’ education as much as possible. I think the thing I anticipate the most about homeschooling is having the ability to tailor the curriculum with what our needs and desires are as a family. Of course, I don’t have to wait until Savannah is 5 before I start teaching her about the outdoors! I found another book that talks about teaching your kids the wonders of nature, and it looks good. I’ll have to get it next time I have some extra money.

* Speaking of outdoors… the mosquitoes are really bad around our house. You can see them flying around, they’re so bad. I need to figure out what to do about that. I remember this from last summer, too, but I was hoping it was just because the grass was so tall. It seems there is another problem besides that… perhaps standing water somewhere? We’ll have to investigate.

I think that is all for tonight!

new carpet!

So the carpet guys just left and I’m so excited!!

Our den looks great. Man, it makes SUCH a difference getting carpet down there. It really feels like a room now. I totally ran and jumped around like a little girl.

Up next: Getting new baseboards and putting them up. That won’t be a pain, right, nailing up 60 feet of baseboard, right?

Also I need to replace the light fixtures and the fan. The fan that’s there has a lot to be desired in terms of usefulness and sound. I’ve been scouting fans at Lowe’s and Home Depot, and think I’m about ready to make my selection. We actually replaced the fan in our living room yesterday (the one that was there broke), so now we can add “basic electrical work” to our list of experiences.

As soon as the baseboards are up, I’ll put up pictures. You’re going to be amazed! :-)
