mother’s day

Savannah decided to make it a great mother’s day by waking up during the night and then getting up early this morning. Fortunately, Paul was so very gracious to let me sleep in and he and Savannah made me breakfast and a card.

After church, we came home and Savannah took a nap. Afterwards we went down to Centennial Olympic Park in Atlanta, where Savannah had the best time playing in the fountain! Here is a fabulous picture:

I also took some video, but the camera is upstairs and I’m lazy so I’ll have to get it later. :-)

I wasn’t sure how she’d like the fountains, but after an initial period of caution she really had such a great time running around and sticking her hands in the water. When we had to leave, we dragged her kicking and screaming. We’ll definitely have to do that regularly this summer.

We also stopped by Coldstone Creamery on the way home, and we were going to do some shopping (my favorite thing! ;-)) but Savannah would have none of that. We are now home and Paul is taking a nap. (Preparing for mother’s day is exhausting!) I’m tired too. I guess I should go make dinner though before Savannah needs to go to bed.

I feel like the past few weeks have been really busy for me. I think I’m going to try and limit our activities this week, just for a break. And to save some gas money. :-)

movie screenings and playdates

About a year ago, I discovered a forum for “crunchy” moms living in Atlanta – cloth diapering, breastfeeding, babywearing, etc. I am very active on there, enjoying the friendships I have made with other like-minded local moms. They are a wonderful group of ladies, and have been so encouraging to me with all things Mommy! In January, I went to a playdate and met many of them in person, and since then I have made the effort to spend time with these ladies as often as I can. :-)

Last night, I joined two of them for a girls’ night to a screening of the movie “Something Borrowed”. It was really fun! The author of the book the movie is based on is apparently from Atlanta, so the author and the producer were there to do some introductions (which I thought was pretty cool!). I enjoyed the movie, but mostly I enjoyed hanging out and gabbing without having to keep anyone from running off into the street. :-)

Today, we had a playdate/surprise birthday party for the creator/moderator of our forum. We had a wonderful time! We met at a park that was somewhat central for everyone, and I alternated between chasing after Savannah in the playground and chatting with these ladies. :-) Whenever we get together, we always make sure our babies have the cutest diapers on and we love gabbing about our favorite diapers and baby carriers, among other topics.

I wish I’d gotten a picture of all of us today, but I totally forgot. Here is a picture of all of us at the Great Cloth Diaper Change a few weeks ago.

If you’re in the Atlanta area and enjoy the company of crispy/crunchy moms, then you should definitely join us!! And if you’re not in Atlanta… then I feel bad for you. :-)

fighting a cold

Well, I opened up the “new post” window a while ago, but haven’t had any inspiration yet. I went to Facebook and Twitter to see what I’ve been writing about lately, to get some ideas.

About a week ago, Paul got a cold, and passed it on to me. He has since gotten better, but this darn thing keeps hanging around. I am getting frequent sinus headaches, which aren’t too much fun! Since I’m allergic* to pseudoephedrine, my options for clearing the cause of those headaches were limited. I sent Paul to the store and he came back with a neti pot. I’ve tried it a few times and I haven’t been overly impressed, though I am excited that I finally got it to work. It doesn’t seem to really be clearing my sinuses though. But, since people swear by it, I’m willing to give it another chance.

I hate colds! I hope it goes away soon. And I hope Savannah doesn’t get it. So far, so good!

I made myself a green smoothie for the first time this week. I was going to have it for lunch every day, but I’ve managed to only have it on Monday. Oh well! Maybe tomorrow. I made it with frozen fruit (strawberries, peaches, pineapple, melon, and grapes), a banana, spinach, water, and a little bit of whey protein. It was pretty good, if I do say so myself, and really filled me up. I am trying to eat healthier lunches because I tend to snack a lot instead of eating a full meal. I also started running at the Y. I had stopped swimming because my suit (bought new last summer) is falling apart and I’m frustrated. I decided that I can’t use it as an excuse not to work out, so if I don’t swim then I have to run.

My flip-flops broke last week. They were my trusty pair that I’ve had for years, and I am very sad to see them go. I tossed them in the kitchen trash can. Savannah found them and rescued them, saying “shoe, shoe!” (She was very concerned about it being in the trash!) She carried them around for a few days. Last night I was cleaning up after she went to bed and I found the flip flop on the couch with a sharp knife sticking out of it, voodoo style. Neither Paul nor I have any idea where she would have gotten the knife – our best guess is that she must have sneaked it while Paul was emptying the dishwasher. It just cracked me up seeing the shoe with the knife sticking out of it.

Savannah has learned to recognize when it’s time for Paul to come home from work. When she sees me getting my purse and keys around that time, she gets really excited and says, “Dada! Dada!” (We usually go pick him up from the train station.) A few days ago, I told her that I was trying to find my shoes and then we would go. She then went and got my running shoes and brought them to me. I thought that was so cute. :-) (But, sadly, I was actually looking for my sandals since I dislike wearing socks in the summer!)

Well I should probably get to bed. It’s almost 1am!

* I got yelled at this by a doctor one time so I need to clarify. I am not actually allergic – I just have a sensitivity to pseudoephedrine. It’s just easier to say allergy.

my stash

A few months ago, I posted a picture of my diaper stash. I have since replaced a lot of my stash. Namely, I got rid of all my microfiber inserts (and therefore am not using my pocket diapers anymore). Here’s a picture of my current stash:

Diapers

Starting in the middle:
- a dozen medium Green Mountain Diaper Chinese prefolds (two were in the diaper bag when this picture was taken)

To the left of the row of prefolds, starting from the front to the back:
- four wet bags
- two sized bumGenius AIO’s
- one one-size Rumparooz pocket diaper (I got this free at the Great Cloth Diaper Change!! I need to do a review once I’ve used it a few more times)
- organic cotton Flip insert

To the right of the row of prefolds, starting from the front to the back:
- four one-size GroVia shells
- two Thirsties Duo covers
- one homemade cover
- one one-size Flip cover
- six snap-in GroVia soaker pads

I’d like to get some more GroVia soakers, but right now this stash gives me enough diapers to make it 2-3 days. I still have all my BabyKangas and FuzziBunz pocket diapers packed away, unsure of what to do with them. I think you can get inserts made of hemp or bamboo that might work better than microfiber… but I am not sure I want to sink all the money into that right now. Still deciding!

I keep my diapers in that blue tub because it makes sorting after laundry easier, and keeps all the diapers together. I used to change Savannah on top of the dresser, but she prefers the floor now. Next to the blue tub I keep everything else I need.
Cloth wipes

In the back, a few disposable diapers and disposable wipes. In front on the left are my cloth wipes, and next to those are my two Snappis. (Love Snappis for prefolds!) On the right, the California Baby diaper area wash that I use to wet her skin before I wipe with a cloth wipe. In the plastic baggie are some Baby Bits that are waiting to be dissolved in hot water to make wipes solution… once I buy a spray bottle!

cloth diapering accessories

I set up a page along the top of my blog, right under the title, that is a collection of all my cloth diapering posts. That way, if you need to refer back to something, you can easily find it. :-) Just to let you know!

I had a friend email me a while back about cloth diapering accessories – what do you need besides the diapers? I love it when people email me like this, because it makes for great blog posts! Fortunately she got an answer from me must faster than the writing of this post. :-) I hope she has had a good transition and was able to get everything she needed!

As with anything, there are many accessories that you can get to make your cloth diapering journey a little easier. Here’s the rundown on what I think you’ll need, though of course everyone is different so it’s most important that you do what works for you!

Diaper pail
The first thing you’ll need is a place to store the dirty diapers until wash day. On the recommendation of friends, I went to Walmart and bought a simple 13 gallon kitchen trash can with a lid that opens when I step on the pedal. It was $12 I think? But really, any simple trash can with a lid should work fine. I keep it next to the changing pad so I can easily toss the dirty diapers in during diaper changes. You can buy special diaper pails made for cloth diapers, and I think the only advantage is that they have a place where you could put some deodorizers. Otherwise, I would just pick up a simple trashcan locally.

Pail liner
Inside the trash can, I use a pail liner made for cloth diapers. I would recommend having two (one to use while you’re washing the other). I went about a year with only one, and I think it’s worth the money to get a second. :-) I really like my PlanetWise pail liner. It comes in many different colors (important in my book, as you know!), and has elastic around the top to keep it in place in the trash can. I also have the GroVia pail liner which is a drawstring, and I don’t like it as much. The drawstring is difficult to adjust quickly, unlike the elastic which is right there.

Some people prefer to skip the pail and just use a pail liner. If you think that’s going to work best for your family, you might be interested in a pail liner with a drawstring. Also, I know FuzziBunz has a hanging diaper pail that I’m told is very nice – it has a loop to hang on a door knob, and unzips at the bottom for easy transfer to the washing machine (for those of you with top loaders).

Why not just use a plastic bag? Well, a pail liner is reusable, which helps further reduce waste. It is made from a waterproof material to keep smells and liquid in. It is also anti-microbial, which is a good thing!

Wet bag
A wet bag is useful for storing dirty diapers when you’re out and about. It can also be repurposed for things like wet swimsuits, so it’s not a bad thing to spend money on now! I actually have four bags, three zippered ones and one drawstring. I dislike the drawstring one only because it doesn’t completely close, which I don’t really like because it’s in my diaper bag. I like having all four, but you probably could just get by with one or two. My favorite wet bag is made by FuzziBunz (called a “diaper tote” on their website) – I love the fabric (a little bit stretchy!) and the handle. And, it keeps my diaper bag dry.

Diaper sprayer
If your baby is exclusively breastfed, you don’t need to worry about a diaper sprayer just yet. This comes in handy after the baby has started solids and the BM consistency has changed. Some people say a diaper sprayer isn’t necessary, but I don’t know how you could cloth diaper without it! We have low-flow toilets (required by law in our county), so dunking really isn’t possible. You’ll want to get all the solid waste off the diaper before throwing it in the washer, and sending it through the toilet is the most sanitary. (This goes for you disposable diaper users too – did you know you’re supposed to dump all solid waste into the toilet before throwing away the diaper?)

A diaper sprayer (also called a portable bidet) is a handy device that makes it easy to rinse off the diapers. I would highly, highly recommend you do it immediately and do not let dirty diapers sit. :-) Not only is rinsing off the diapers more sanitary, but it helps keep the diapers from staining. The diaper sprayer is easily installed on the toilet – you can do it in a rental house too without damaging anything, and take it with you when you leave. There’s a bit of a learning curve when you first start where you spray your entire bathroom with water. :-) But I’ve gotten to the point where I get very little water outside the toilet.

Cloth wipes
I have to admit, I only use cloth wipes about half the time. We use disposable wipes for all the dirty diapers, and cloth wipes for just wet diapers. (Paul uses disposable wipes all the time.) Most of my wipes were made for me by a friend – just pieces of fabric surged around the edges. They are easy to make! You can also cut up flannel (like an old receiving blanket!) or use baby washclothes.

Dry cloth wipes aren’t very effective, though, so you’ll need to somehow wet it. Right now, I am using California Baby Diaper Area Wash (you can get it at Target), which comes in a little spray bottle. I spray it directly on her skin and then use a dry wipe. Some people spray the wipe itself first, but this way is easier for me. You can also dilute the solution with water to make it last longer (according to the back of the bottle).

A friend of mine loves using Baby Bits for cloth wipes solution. She gave me a few to try out, but I need to get a spray bottle first. Some people just use plain water, but I am hoping that some of the natural ingredients in the solutions will keep Savannah from getting her frequent diaper rashes.

I personally think wipes warmers are unnecessary, but I know a lot of cloth diapering moms who love them. A friend wrote about them in detail here, if that interests you.

I am not going to cover any detergent in this post… So I think that’s about it. :-) Am I missing anything?
